TEDx Talk: Transcultural Learning through Larp

Talk about the potential of educational larp at the KyotoUniversityTEDx Talk event on July 7, 2024.

I was invited to present my research and educational activities at the 2024 KyotoUniversityTEDx event, joining colleagues from the Institute for Research in Humanities (Jinbunken), Kyoto University Hospital, and also private companies under the umbrella of 主客未分 (shukyakumibun), a term referring to a state in Nishida Kitarō’s philosophy where the two opposing things, subjectivity (subject) and objectivity (object) are not separated. A difficult to grasp concept, which I dare declare to understand, it speaks to the attempt in transcultural learning to question movements of othering.

In this sense, my talk discussed the challenges neuro-minorities face in mainstream society and how larp can be a way to better understand these challenges so that we can create a more inclusive society. You can find a more detailed discussion of this topic and relevant ideas in my upcoming paper, ‘Transcultural Learning with Role-Playing Games: Awareness through First-Person Experiences’ (2025, Mechademia 17 (2)).

The TEDx event took place mostly in Japanese. I was asked to present in English instead. With many middle and high school students attenting, the talk targets an audience of non-native speakers.

Please find a recording of my talk and those of my colleagues here.

I thank Gerel and the rest of the TEDx team for a fantastic event!
